Pain has a way of leaving its mark, doesn’t it? Many of us carry wounds from past experiences, moments that tested our strength and pushed us to the edge. But those painful chapters don’t have to be the end of the story. In fact, God has a beautiful way of taking those struggles and using them to shape us for something greater, something that brings meaning and impact.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. – Romans 8:28 (NIV)
Take Shola, for example. She had always been strong, capable, and full of faith. But then, in a span of just a few years, everything seemed to crumble. She lost her job, faced a heartbreaking betrayal, and felt isolated from the life she once knew. The nights were the hardest, filled with questions, doubts, and a feeling that the future she had hoped for was slipping away.
In one of those quiet, dark moments, Shola found herself on her knees, whispering a question we’ve all asked at some point: “God, why is this happening?” In the stillness that followed, she felt a gentle assurance: “This is not the end, Shola. I’m taking you somewhere.” That answer didn’t change her circumstances overnight, but it did plant a seed in her heart—a seed of hope that maybe, just maybe, this season of pain was part of a greater story.
1. Embracing Pain as Part of God’s Process
Shola didn’t know it then, but that season of pain was a critical part of God’s process in her life. She wasn’t just enduring hardship; she was being refined, like gold in the fire. The tears, the sleepless nights, the heartache—all of it was preparing her for something she couldn’t yet see.
James 1:2-4 (NIV) – Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.
Embracing the pain wasn’t easy. Shola wrestled with questions, but slowly, she began to see glimpses of God’s purpose. Each struggle became a stepping stone, a lesson that strengthened her faith and prepared her for what was to come.
God can turn every pain into purpose and every setback into a setup for His glory.
2. The Power of Surrendering to God’s Plan
One of the most transformative moments for Shola came when she decided to let go. Surrender wasn’t giving up; it was trusting that God’s wisdom was far greater than her own understanding. She made the choice to stop fighting against her circumstances and start leaning into God’s promises, even when she couldn’t see the outcome.
2 Corinthians 4:16-17 (NIV) – Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.
Surrender became her strength. In those moments of letting go, Shola found peace—not because everything was perfect, but because she knew she wasn’t carrying the weight alone. God was right there, guiding her through every high and low, preparing her for a purpose she hadn’t even imagined.
3. Finding Healing and Restoration in God’s Presence
Divine settlement begins within. Shola realized that for her to move forward, she had to let go of the bitterness, the pain, and the “what ifs.” She needed God’s healing touch to bind up those broken places and give her the strength to face each new day with hope.
Psalm 147:3 (NIV) – He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Healing didn’t happen overnight. It was a process, one filled with moments of vulnerability and honesty before God. But each time she turned to Him, she felt His peace slowly replacing the pain. She learned that true divine settlement isn’t just about finding peace around you but finding it within you.
4. Walking Boldly in Your Purpose
Today, Shola’s story is a testament to God’s faithfulness. What once seemed like insurmountable pain has become the foundation of her purpose. Shola now uses her story to encourage others, showing them that no season of struggle is wasted. Her life is filled with purpose, and she moves forward with a strength she never knew she had.
2 Corinthians 1:4 (NIV) – He comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
When we allow God to transform our pain, we don’t just survive—we thrive. We walk forward with confidence, equipped to make an impact and bring hope to others. Shola’s journey reminds us that every painful chapter has the potential to become a testimony of God’s grace.
When you surrender your pain to God, He turns it into a testimony of His grace.
Practical Steps to Turn Pain into Purpose
1. Reflect and Journal on Lessons Learned
